2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Essentials: Power!

Car reviews / Пятница, Октябрь 26th, 2018

What is it: The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is a two-seater coupe with better performance for your dollar than anything with four wheels. The ZR1 is the top-of-the-line Corvette, above the Stingray, Grand Sport and Z06. This one comes with the Track Performance Package, which includes a rear wing larger than an ironing board.

Highlights: New for 2019, the ZR1 is the crown jewel of the C7 Corvette lineup and quite possibly the fastest and quickest front-engine Corvette that Chevrolet will ever build. 755 hp from the 6.2-liter supercharged V8 is a lot to play with, as is the 715 lb-ft of torque. This came equipped with the correct transmission — a seven-speed manual — but an eight-speed automatic is also available. This car also has brakes and a chassis that can keep up with the power, but the driver is less of a certainty.

Our Opinion: Power! There is always an abundance of power in the ZR1. It matters little the speed at which the car is already moving or the gear it’s in. Downhill or uphill are also of little consequence. You will always feel pull, and it will be more than you expect. And it's accessible, too. Putting the power to the ground is easy to time and, unless you goose the throttle, the tires hold to the road with impressive adhesion.

Because this ZR1 came with the Track Performance Package, grip was immense. I experienced that mostly while driving up cloverleaf on-ramps and noticing how much I needed to slow down to merge with freeway traffic. The competition seats, also installed here, held me in place with plenty of space and support. In similar fashion, the steering wheel rim is nice and thick and quite easy to find a comfortable spot for your thumbs.

I’m sure it surprises no one that the ZR1 is supercar-capable, considering the latest Z06 from the Bowtie brand. But the civility the ZR1 possesses is the real surprise. No, this would not be your first choice for a 1,000-mile road trip across I-80, but other than fairly frequent stops for gas, you wouldn’t have much to complain about either.

When Jake Lingeman drove the car for the first drive review, it focused a lot on the track for pretty obvious reasons. I drove over Empire Hill Climb weekend, logging more than 500 miles in a day, not including my own six trips up the hill. And it was an easy car to live with — intuitive radio and navigation controls, nice cupholders and plenty of cargo space. Granted, it’s not a quiet car on the road. Even when spinning at 1,500 rpm down the interstate, the 6.2-liter V8 ensures its presence is known. Track car tires tend not to get top marks for rolling quietness.

But who cares! You have seven hundred and fifty-five horsepower at your disposal! Other attributes of a car cower in fear of such a mighty number, as do other cars nearby. If the noise bothers you, buy earplugs.
